Godly Play on the Seventh Sunday After Pentecost

Welcome to our online Godly Play circle on the Seventh Sunday After Pentecost.

First of all, we want to remind you that next week we will be meeting for our second LIVE session of Godly Play over Zoom! This is part of our new Godly Play summer program which you can read more about here. It’s not too late to RSVP.

This week we are hearing a story from the Old Testament. To match the Old Testament reading in our Holy Eucharist service, we will learn more about the story of Jacob from the book of Genesis. Brooke is our storyteller and Shannon will help us get ready for the story. Click on the video below to watch!

If you would like to re-visit the wondering questions from the end of the video they were as follows:

  • I wonder what part of this story was your favorite?

  • I wonder what part was most important?

  • I wonder where you saw yourself in the story? Or which part felt like it was especially about you?

  • I wonder if there is any part we could leave out and still have all we need?

The song that Shannon shared in the introduction is called “We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.” In this version we replace the original lyrics of “soldiers of the cross” with a more peaceful variation: “children of the Lord.” If you would like to listen to a wonderful traditional recording of this spiritual with your children, we recommend the following:

For families with younger children (~6 and younger), here is a fun video with movements:

As always, we encourage you to take some time after watching the video to reflect and respond to the story through art, writing or play.

We also wanted to share a couple fun activities you could try, if you want to keep exploring the story of Jacob’s dream as a family:

Learn how to make Jacob’s Ladder out of string. This video shows you how:

Make a “Jacob’s Ladder” themed snack using pretzels or a combo of pretzels and marshmallows:
