Godly Play on the Second Sunday After Pentecost

Welcome to the first Sunday of "ordinary time"! A note about this liturgical season: there's nothing ordinary about it. The word "ordinary" as used here comes from the ordinal numerals by which the weeks are identified or counted. The liturgical color is green, which represents "green and growing things" as well as hope--like the hope we feel when we see the first buds in springtime.

This week we have chosen a story to match the gospel reading in our Holy Eucharist service. The story is called "Jesus Calls the 12 Disciples" and the script comes from a book called Following Jesus by Sonja Stewart.

You can find the story in the Bible in each of the Synoptic Gospels: Mark 3:7-19, Matthew 10:1-4 and Luke 6:12-16.

Here are today's wondering questions from the story along with a few more:

  • I wonder why it was these people Jesus called from the crowd?

  • I wonder how the twelve disciples feel being called to be with Jesus?

  • I wonder how the twelve disciples feel about being sent to tell the good news of the kingdom of God?

  • I wonder what they said when they told of the kingdom of God?

  • I wonder how they feel being sent to heal people?

  • I wonder how the disciples feel when the sick are healed?

  • I wonder how the people feel?

  • I wonder if the people want to follow the way of the kingdom of God?

In our introduction to today’s story, Brooke shared a song she learned on the Camino de Santiago called "Chant des Pelerins de Compostelle." Here are the words and music to this song:

For responding to today's story, your child may wish to create something as the Spirit moves them using art supplies. These supplies do not need to be elaborate. A simple box of crayons or colored pencils and white printer paper work well. If the weather is nice, sidewalk chalk and some time outside might provide the perfect opportunity for response. Children may also wish to use movement to express what may be difficult for them to say with words. Since this is their personal response time, no prescribed responses are prepared for them.

Finally -- summer is here! And you might be grasping for things to do with your children at home in the long months ahead. We wanted to pass along a great resource for families and children to use in their home faith formation throughout the summer. It is a free summer activity pack developed by Church Publishing inviting us to to explore our Baptismal Covenant through the lens of water. Download now at this link: https://bit.ly/2yXotlb
