Nursery Assistant

About the Role

St. Mark's is seeking a dependable, caring Nursery Assistant to help provide safe and nurturing care to the young children (ages 1–6) in our church nursery.

Working alongside and under the direction of our Nursery Director, Yury Murcia, the assistant helps create a warm, calm, and joyful space for our youngest children during Sunday services. Our nursery extends the cathedral's Montessori-inspired "Godly Play" approach to its littlest members, offering gentle, developmentally appropriate care and play. The assistant does not need to be Episcopalian but should be comfortable working in a faith-based setting.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Start Date: August 30, 2026

  • Hours: Sundays, 9:00 a.m.–Noon during the program year (Sept-May); 10:15 a.m.–Noon during the summer (June-Aug)

  • Pay: $15 per hour

  • The nursery is closed over major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, July 4th, etc.).

Key Responsibilities

Provide nurturing, age-appropriate care. Cheerfully interact with children through games, stories, play, crafts, and snack time, helping create a Montessori/Godly Play–inspired environment.

Care for children's basic needs. Assist with feeding, diaper changing, escorting to the bathroom, and holding or sitting with children as needed.

Help maintain a safe, clean space. Keep the nursery tidy, organized, and inviting, and follow all safety guidelines.

Support the Nursery Director. Follow the director's lead, assist with the flow of the morning, and help wherever needed.

Be punctual and dependable. Arrive on time and ready for each shift. Communicate planned absences with at least one weeks' notice and unplanned absences at least two hours before the shift.

Keep children safe through transitions. Remain in the nursery until every child has been picked up by a responsible adult named on the child's registration form.

Core Competencies

  • Some experience caring for or working with young children (ages 1–6) preferred, with the ability to adapt to a variety of personalities

  • A warm, patient, and dependable presence

  • Comfort working in a faith-based setting

  • Satisfactory completion of a background check

  • Completion of Safe Church training, and agreement to read and adhere to the Diocesan Policy on the Protection of Children and Youth from Abuse and sign a code of conduct (the cathedral will guide you through this)

Godly Play Leader

About the Role

St. Mark's is seeking a warm, reliable, and organized Godly Play Leader to anchor our Sunday morning children's formation program (for children ages 4–10). Godly Play is a Montessori-based approach to Christian formation that invites children to wonder, explore, and make meaning through sacred story, wonder and play. 

The Godly Play leader will hold the structure and rhythm of the classroom while a rotating cast of parish volunteers will usually be the ones to take turns as the storyteller. Your role is to create a calm, predictable, and joyful environment so that each visiting storyteller can focus simply on sharing the story from the heart, while you guide the children through the full arc of the session. Occasionally you might be the one to tell the story, as well. Regardless, you will be the steady, consistent presence the children will come to know week after week.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Start Date: August 30, 2026

  • Hours (program year, Sept–May): Approximately 3–6 hours per week. A typical week includes 2.5 hours on Sundays (9:00–11:30 a.m.), compensation for up to 1 hour of prep, and the opportunity for occasional weeknight hours providing childcare during family formation events. Hours will fluctuate from week to week depending on whether any extra formation events are scheduled or whether it is a family service Sunday. Roughly one Sunday a month is a family service Sunday, on which the regular Sunday and prep time are not required.

  • Hours (summer, June–Aug): Still to be determined. While our regular Godly Play programming is on break during the summer, there may be opportunities for hours through occasional children and family formation events or a Godly Play inspired summer camp program.
    Pay: $15-20 per hour, depending on experience. 

Key Responsibilities

Hold the rhythm of the session. Lead the class through the established flow of a Godly Play morning: welcoming and signing in children, building the circle, helping children settle and "get ready" for the story, lighting the Christ candle, offering the opening prayer before handing the time off to the storyteller. After the story you will help guide the wondering questions, the transition to work time, and the feast.

Support the visiting storyteller. Welcome and orient each week's volunteer storyteller, ensure they have what they need, and guide the room so they can focus entirely on telling the story. 

Manage the classroom with warmth. Serve as the loving, attentive adult presence in the room. Gently support children who are having a hard time settling or who need redirection, and maintain a safe, respectful, and welcoming space for every child.

Care for children's transitions. Ensure each child is signed in at arrival and either checked into children’s choir or released to the proper parent or guardian at the end.

Maintain the space and materials. Help open and close the classroom each week, keep Godly Play materials organized and complete, and ensure all food, craft supplies, toys and stories are returned to good order.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children, ideally in a classroom, ministry, or childcare setting

  • Strong classroom-management instincts and a calm, patient presence

  • Comfort leading a structured routine while remaining flexible and child-led

  • Comfort working within an Episcopal Christian formation setting (people of all backgrounds are warmly welcome)

  • Reliability and a commitment to consistent Sunday presence

  • Familiarity with Montessori or Godly Play is a plus; training and support will be provided.

  • Completion of Safe Church training and a background check prior to starting (the cathedral will guide you through this)
