Advent Series -- Centering Prayer: A Training Course for Opening to the Presence of God
This four week series will focus on Advent as a time for watching, waiting, and learning to attend self-forgetfully to the presence of God in the sacrament of the present moment.
Mindfulness is all the rage these days, and it is taught as a way to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, treat anxiety and depression and even increase worker productivity. Many Christians don't know that a tradition of silent prayer and meditation exists at beating heart of their own tradition as a means, not just of improving health and well-being, but of union and communion with the living God.
This course, using DVD presentations by Fr. Thomas Keating, O.S.C.O. and practical hands-on exercises, will provide basic instruction, theological background, and an examination of the Christian mystical tradition (The Cloud of Unknowing, St John of the Cross, Theresa of Avila, Thomas Merton and others) in order to provide participants with the basic tools for beginning and sustaining a daily practice of contemplative prayer.
Facilitator: The Reverend Tyler B. Doherty, Priest-in-Charge.
Location: Bates Room
